Flotation, or more specifically, the froth flotation process uses the differences in the surface properties of particles, normally with the addition of reagents to achieve mineral separation.
Surfactants play a critical role in the industrial flotation process since their interaction with the particle surface essentially determines the hydrophobicity of the particles and their probability of attachment to bubbles during collisions in the flotation cells. A large number of surfactants and auxiliary reagents are used in the flotation process depending on the properties of the particles to be processed and the ultimate aim of the process.
For over 35 years, KAO has been working in the field of froth flotation, carrying out research and developing new flotation reagents (sometimes tailor-made) whilst collaborating closely with our customers.
Our application laboratory and technical department are maintained at our headquarters building for research into and development of new flotation agents. At this laboratory, the practical aspects of the use of a reagent are established by extensive tests, which are subsequently tried further on a larger scale in the field.
However, there is a sample service, allowing our customers to do those tests in their own plant laboratories.
Needless to say, our aim is to provide technical assistance and advise through our technical know-how in order to optimise industrial processes and yields, and to improve the quality of our customers end-products and thus meet their specific needs.
