Nowadays, cleansing formulations do much more than cleanse hair and skin; they are also expected to provide additional benefits such as, conditioning, ease of combing, soft feel and pleasing appearance. Complex coacervation plays an important role in providing many of these features.

Complex coacervation is a phase separation from the bulk solution formed by cationic polymers with surfactant systems, when diluted. A coacervate contains a high level of cationic charge and it is known to deposit the polymer on hair and enhance the adsorption of insoluble actives, such as silicones.
